After first few sessions there might be itching of place of bite , slight bruising or even swelling. This is normal and disappears within couple of days. Later on, when blood is clean no bruising or itching will occur. Patients also might feel weak following first sessions due to blood loss and toxins leaving the body. Drinking a lot of water and rest helps. Later when body adapts there will be minor blood loss and no side effects.

Very first applications normally result in a prolonged bleeding between 8-24 hours. After the sessions repeated body adapts to leeches and bleeding decreases, eventually coming to its minimum that is normally between 20 min to 3 hours.
